Artist Statement
Through my creative practice I explore aspects of culture, consciousness, identity and interpersonal communication. I primarily use the following digital media: film, animation, photography, vector graphics and audio.
My ideas have strong ties to the Theatre of the Absurd, Surrealism, and in particular the late minimalist plays of Samuel Beckett, with their concern for creating drama and fiction that dispense with conventional plot and the unities of place and time, in order to focus on the human condition.
In some of my recent works I have been exploring liminal states of being, in which characters, places, or things are presented as ambiguous or in a permanent threshold state in-between other states. I use the artistic technique of ostranenie - forcing the audience to see common things in an unfamiliar or strange way, in order to enhance perception of the familiar.
Another strand in my work is concerned with mining data from the internet to construct narrative structures that reflect on culture from a sociological and psychological perspective.
The intention is that my work should act as a window into humanity and consciousness, reflecting the connection between language, symbols, context and narrative for generating meaning.
